We know a lot of our clients travel often, both around Europe and further afield, so we’re always on the lookout for new high-end hotel openings to blog about. And… it just so happens that on a recent trip to Malta we discovered some rather exciting things going on in the luxury sector – good news for visitors regardless of whether you’re there on business or pleasure!
Malta has long been loved for its island mentality. It’s a laid-back, slow-living kind of place with delicious Sicilian-inspired food and some rather delicious local wines. But it’s probably fair to say that a little regeneration is going a long way, and since the capital, Valletta, was crowned 2018 European Capital of Culture much of the island’s accommodation and nightlife is getting a face lift.
So what should you look out for? Firstly, the five star Phoenicia hotel in Valletta is due to open its refurbished doors in June having upgraded all of its 136 rooms (along with its swimming pool and gym) and marking itself out as a recent addition to the CampbellGrays hotel portfolio (http://www.campbellgrayhotels.com/phoenicia/home). Secondly, undergoing a similar head-to-toe makeover is The Hilton in the exclusive Portomaso Harbour area (www.hilton.com/Malta) – due to reopen to guests this very week (late April 2016). Another supersonic refurbishment is taking place at the Intercontinental in Paceville (www.intercontinentalhotelmalta.com), a luxury hotel particularly renowned for its vast conference facilities (with one main room as big as a rock concert hall!) and newly-opened 24-hour Casino. Other luxury accomodation options on the island include The Palace Hotel in nearby Sliema, which offers unique suites and across-the-water views of Unesco Heritage Site, Valletta (http://thepalacemalta.com/).
For something truly historical (not to mention memorable) however, you might like to experience The Xara Palace in the medieval village of Mdina – another Unesco Heritage Site. This exquisite 17th century palace-turned-luxury-hotel is the only Relais Chateau property on the island (http://xarapalace.com.mt/) and particularly famed for the panoramic views and fine dining experience in the de Mondion Restaurant.
