Who’d have ever thought that a fridge could be high fashion? It’s not the first thing we expected either, but we’re happy to discover a new collaboration between two big Italian names, trendy kitchen appliance brand, Smeg and infamous designer Dolce & Gabbana.
The result of this exclusive partnership, which was unveiled at Milan’s renowned design show Salone del Mobile (www.salonemilano.it/), is Smeg’s instantly recognisable FAB28 fridge, reimagined. It’s a time-consuming and expensive process, with each of the one hundred uniquely conceived and individually hand painted fridges taking two hundred and forty hours to complete and garnering a breathtaking price tag of £30,000.
It’s an exciting move for fashion, technology and interior decorating worlds and also for proud Italians because both companies have a strong ‘Made in Italy’ ethos. Yet it’s not the first time the FAB fridge has been offered up as a canvas upon which artists can unfurl their talent. It’s been Piet Mondrian-inspired, a fully functioning blackboard, Swarovski encrusted, and even covered in denim as part of a collaboration with Italian designer Lapo Elkann. The new limited edition collection is something entirely new however; it has been created by local Sicilian artists under the personal direction of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, each of whom have painted emotive one-off works featuring provincial symbols and historical medieval scenes such as lemons, the trinacria flag, cart wheels and medieval knights
